At Zenith we are committed to the ongoing support, development and recognition of the information profession. Our commitment is served by a philosophy of partnership and collaboration whereby working alongside clients and industry partners, we believe we can provide more efficient, valuable and productive outcomes.

In this light we are developing a partnership with the Training & Development Services division at the University of Technology Sydney. One of our first initiatives is to explore the potential for an Executive Certificate in Knowledge Management. The program is specifically designed for people who want to develop knowledge-enabled organisations and provides an opportunity to develop existing skills and organisational experience into the dimension of managing knowledge.

If you would like to learn more about please click Executive Certificate in Knowledge Management – Brochure to review course information. Please note we will be looking to establish a Zenith specific program in the future in partnership with UTS, and this brochure serves as a guide to the potential for us.

The Reading Hour on 25 August 2012 will be both a focal point for the National Year of Reading 2012 for all ages and also the call to action for families – “share a book with your child for 10 minutes a day, an hour a week”.

Margaret Allen, chair of the National Year of Reading founders and State Library of WA, explained, “The Reading Hour itself is for everyone and there will be activities for all age groups, but there will be a special message for families. The phrase ’10 minutes a day, an hour a week’ is our ‘slip, slop, slap’. It’s the take away message that we hope will become the accepted norm. We know it’s not always possible for parents to share a book at bedtime with their children, but if they can manage 10 minutes most nights, their child will have the best chance of becoming a good reader, with all the social and educational benefits that brings. Most of our brain development happens between birth and three years of age, so it’s not enough to assume that children will learn to read when they get to school. Parents need to share stories and rhymes right from day one – and a good way of finding out more is to join storytimes, rhymetimes, baby bounce and toddler sessions at your local library.”

Key partners for The Reading Hour are Dymocks, The Walt Disney Company and Dymocks Children’s Charities. Together, these three partners have exciting plans for activities beginning in the first half of 2012 and leading up to the big day on 25 August.

In addition, Scholastic Group will be promoting The Reading Hour through its search for reading superheroes scholastic.com.au/minisites/readingsuperhero, MS Readathon will be running a special “60 minutes for MS” event on 24 August, and Kumon au.kumonglobal.com will be organising Read Together groups in public libraries for students and families from multicultural backgrounds.

The Reading Hour is nominally 6pm to 7pm on 25 August, but events will be happening all day, to avoid or coincide with important sporting fixtures and venue opening hours, and to accommodate the different time zones. Events will take place in libraries, bookstores and other public places.

Zenith has recently partnered with the UNSW to create a “talent pool” to work as a project team for the UNSW Library.

As part of the Getting Started Project, this team’s role was to introduce new students to the Library, and all the other various services offered in the lead up to “O” week.

Zenith sourced and interviewed the candidates, who needed to have at least two semesters at UNSW and possibly speak more than one language. We put together a team of fifteen bright, enthusiastic “Green Team” members whose key role is to meet, greet and assist new students in the Library throughout January and February. This photo shows the team at their initial orientation..

We are happy to discuss any project team or talent pool you may need to put together – short term or long term. We cover all the time and paperwork intensive issues including advertising, interviewing, employee orientation and payroll. You receive one invoice, once a week, no hassles – interested? Please call Nell Hirst on 8116 4706 or Stam Gambrellis on 8116 4707.

If you are planning to roll out RFID throughout your library allow Zenith to take some of the hard work away. The thought of retro fitting your collection may be giving you headaches……

Last year the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) implemented RFID. Part of the project involved encoding and inserting RFID tags into their entire collection. UTS decided to engage Zenith’s Library Technical Services Division (LTS) to perform some of the simpler tasks – the encoding and insertion of RFID tags in over 514,000 monographs (some with one disk). The more complicated materials such as audio visuals and serials/journals were completed in-house with the use of Zenith’s Staffing Services Division providing some temporary staff as well as UTS core staff.

Initially this project was to cover several months, however due to circumstances beyond the control of UTS the project timeframe was condensed to only 12 weeks. LTS was contracted to provide the service on a fixed rate basis (i.e. a per item charge). Training, OH&S, and Day to Day Management of the onsite team remained the responsibility of LTS – this type of project managed contract is known as insourcing (the same concept as outsourcing except the work is completed on your site). The work was conducted over two sites in Sydney and required six encoding trolleys to be in constant use by the teams, each comprising two staff.

LTS was able to advertise, interview and test over 70 applicants within two weeks of being awarded the contract. 26 students were selected, recruited and inducted. Total responsibility for the team was managed by LTS, including roster management and quality control of output. Roster management was a huge time saving for UTS as the contract covered a four week exam period during which time LTS managed to have 95% of shifts covered by ensuring students were not rostered for work during their exam times.

Whether your RFID project is large or small contact Julie Daw, General Manager of Zeniths Library Technical Services for more details on how to manage the work. A solution can be tailored to suit your needs and include both a project managed or insourced solution along with the more traditional provision of casual staff.
