Zenith was recently asked to contribute a short article on our thoughts for the future of our profession…

Librarians understand, and have acted on, the strong messages around the need for on-going development in the use of technology to both source and deliver resources to our clients.

We also understand that training clients on how to fully utilise technology is now one of our most important functions. We get it – we are doing it.

And so to our future – what next? ……to read our entire response please see the full text of the article in the May 2013 issue of Incite, email Nell Hirst directly on nell@zenmgt.com or click Future of Library Profession

In an innovative approach to nurturing new talent, Zenith and clients including the Institute of Chartered Accountants, UNSW and Bain have developed internship programs for students or new graduates.

At ICAA the program is a paid, professional Internship and Mentoring program for students completing their Information Management degree. The program aims for Zenith to source a pool of casuals to assist the Institute’s Knowledge Centre, initially as 3.5 hour shifts, quickly increased to four hours and is now 4.5 hours per day (1-5.30pm).

The program represents an investment offering long term gain for all parties. The Institute gains experienced, on-call members of staff to work on a consistent basis, working additional hours or acting as back-up on projects, staff leave, conferences etc, as required, in return for training.

New graduates gain relevant experience and a “foot in the door” to the corporate world, in exchange for a reduced hourly wage while working within the program. Zenith develops a pool of recently qualified candidates with experience in the corporate sector, in return for nurturing candidates to that stage by arranging placements at minimal hourly charge to the client. Zenith approached Universities running relevant degree courses to publicise the program to appropriate students.

The proposition was applauded by Lecturers, as a solution to the age old problem of Employers only wanting experienced staff, and new graduates not being able to offer experience until they have experience.

The Institute’s Knowledge and Research Specialist, Alyson Dalby, said of the program when it started in 2008:
“It gives us a chance to demonstrate the commitment that the Institute has to professional development in general, not just in the accounting field. We also have access to a constant pool of new ideas, attitudes and talent – the interns keep us on our toes!”

The program has been running very successfully since 2008, if you think an Internship Program might benefit your organisation, please contact Sally Dallas or Nell Hirst on 1300 852 555.

Zenith, via its parent company CareersMultiList, has become a member of the United National Global Compact. We have developed a specific strategic plan to ensure we embrace and implement specific policies against each principle business principal (in particular those for the environment).

The UN Global Compact is not a regulatory instrument, but rather a voluntary initiative that relies on public accountability, transparency and disclosure to complement regulation and to provide a space for innovation.

As a leadership initiative endorsed by chief executives, it seeks to align business operations and strategies everywhere with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

Through a wide spectrum of specialised work streams, management tools, resources, and topical programmes, the UN Global Compact aims to advance two objectives:

– Mainstream its 10 principles in business activities around the world
– Catalyse actions in support of broader UN goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

By doing so, business, as the primary agent driving globalization, can help ensure that markets, commerce, technology and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies everywhere and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive global economy.

The UN Global Compact’s ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption enjoy universal consensus and are derived from:

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work

The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development

The United Nations Convention Against Corruption

The UN Global Compact asks companies to embrace, support and enact, within their sphere of influence, a set of core values in the areas of human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption….click here to learn more.

There is no doubt an appropriate plan for managing human capital and employee performance is crucial to all organisations. Zenith recently sponsored a workshop at the Municipal Association of Victoria which presented an integrated framework for linking business strategy and workforce strategies. Throughout the workshop participants from local government across Victoria explored the following models and concepts:

the five ways to build human capital

the three types of capabilities/competencies from organisational to individual

segmentation of your workforce and differentiation of roles according to a skills-based model (i.e. skills value and skills uniqueness)

the psychological contract (or employer/employee relationship)

the people data cube and the reporting of three types of human capital data.

The workshop featured a case study based on the experiences of Cardinia Shire Council that was presented by Colin Beames, Director WRDI Institute, and Di Ashton, Manager Organisational Development at Cardinia Shire…click Workshop Flyer – HR Strategy in Victoria for more details.
